She was a graduate of Santa Fe Preparatory School in 1986. She attended Northwestern University, where she was a theatre student and completed her degree in 1989. Gunn went to her first British American Drama Academy for one semester during the fall of 1988. Pamela Adlon was her housemate after Gunn moved from Laurel Canyon Los Angeles. Gunn has been known for playing Skyler White in the AMC Breaking Breaking. Gunn was nominated to win the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in the Drama Series in 2013 and 2014. Her performance was a winner both 2013 and 2014. The New York Times published an article in August 2013, which examined the negative public perception of her character.
