Madekwe comes from a mixed-race family from South London in England. Madekwe is English but her father is Nigerian. Her family was raised on an estate in South London community estate, and at the age of 14, attended The Brit School. She was a student at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London which she graduated with an acting BA. While at the academy, she appeared in numerous performances on stage, such as King Henry V playing Princess Katherine and Wuthering Heights portraying Catherine Earnshaw.
Madekwe started acting in Storm Damage. She's appeared as guest for Teachers Doctors Casualty Drop Dead Gorgeous. Madekwe's first film appearance was Woody Allen's Cassandra's Dream (2007), opposite Colin Farrell. The film's success resulted in her being cast as Elisha as a one-off BBC Three drama West 10 LDN pilot. She then appeared in the six-episode series Trexx & Flipside playing the character of Ollie. Madekwe played Bambi in the ITV2 drama Secret Diary of a Call Girl. Madekwe starred as the lead character on How to Lose Friends And Alienate Others, a comedy made in 2008. Her theatre credits comprise Little Sweet Thing by Roy Williams as well as Flight Path by David Watson.
Madekwe made her official US debut on the drama The Beautiful Life, which just aired two episodes in the US on The CW before being cancelled. Ashley Leggat is a Gemini-nominated actress who was raised in the large family. Her parents were Patty and Roy Leggat. Her parents were Roy and Patty and four older brothers, Rob, Brett, and twins Todd and Bram. The four brothers of Ashley, each of them extremely physically active, were all playing hockey in the winters and baseball in the summers, meaning she basically grew up in baseball and arenas.
