Queen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. The second child of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is best known for her political activism, acting abilities and talent for rhyme. A Muslim cousin gave Latifah the title "delicate sensitive" when she was just eight years old. Latifah started singing in the Shiloh Baptist Church's choir located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. Her first performance was when she sang "Home" in the role of Dorothy in a show of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's Parochial School. Latifah was inspired by her mother, who was always in touch with the students and music. Mark James, the local disc jockey, was invited by Latifah's mother to perform at the dance. Mark the 45 King, invited her to perform at the school dance.
