
Ormond was born in Epsom, Surrey, the daughter of Josephine the laboratory technician, and John Ormond, a stockbroker. Ormond is the fifth of five children born to her parents. Her first performances in Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady attracted the attention of many. Then, she went to Cranleigh School and Guildford High School. After one year of arts school, she transferred to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art where she was graduated in 1988. Ormond first appeared in British television in the 1989 series Traffik which focused on the illegal heroin trade from the Far East to the streets of Europe. Ormond was the heroin-addicted kid of the main character, an Home Office minister working to fight heroin imports. The role was Ormond's debut and received glowing reviews.
